Since vedic times indian have been used the spices. Already some Medicinal uses of spices is given in Rigveda, Yajurvedo and Atharvaveda.
Great sage sushruta you already know him in my previous blogs had used spices like cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, sesome ansblack pepper for their surgeries because of there healing and curing properties. 

In indian farms spices were grown in 2000 BCE. And the indus river valley used to trade spices with foreign countries. It's true that also in Egypt Indian spices were used to preserve mummies for long time. Before burying the mummies peppercorns were stuffed into the nostrils.

Humid climate condition and favourable weather patterns is the reason of indian soil was considered as perfect growing spices. Their native Spices such as turmeric, Cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, coriander and red chilli were renowned the world over. The demand of the indian spices was so high 


In 337 BCE the great Alexander invaded india just because these spices and their high demand in the world. He returned with the most valuable spices from india. The biggest producer of spices is always india but for centuries the role of middleman was performed by the arab traders. They made story related to cinnamon bird & poisonous Snakes just to keep other traders away from the spices trade. They said everyone that the dense pepper forest is protected by dangerous snakes and they first burned forest and then snake go away from forest how white pepper got burned and turned into black pepper. European believe these stories and can pay any price to get the black pepper. Black pepper become life saving drugs in European countries. Price is growing and so valuable only rich people can buy it. People used it as a status symbol and they locked it in locker. Also used as house rent in some countries, to save slaves. This is the reason of name black gold. 

After realizing the increasing demand of black pepper arabs increased 40% of rate. European frustrated and decide to come india. Vasco Da Gamo in 1948 reached calicut india's main spices producing area. It is believed that they lost there 300 sailor lives in ships, but this wasn't a loss in front of the profit which was cinnamon & Black pepper about 60% profit. 

During a voyage, legend vasco pa gama asked the king zamorin of calicut that can we get your pepper plant and grow it on portugal. The king laughed and said,"You may take the plant with you but how will you take the rainbow we get from here? ". The Portuguese got king's message that the best climatic condition of spices better growth are Indian climate only. 
This is why in the 16th century he started colonising the western shore From the malabar coast to goa.
But now the Spanish, French, british,and dutch knows the fact that whos rule india, rules the world. One by one several countries comes to india to rule but Britain was most powerful from other countries. And finally they captured whole india. Today india is a democratic country. But its a fact that the invaders try to robs precious things from india even they robed some of them but they couldn't rob our land where worlds best spices still cultivated. 

Today, india is the largest producer, consumer and exporter in the world. States such as , Rajasthan, gujrat and  andhrapradesh are the most spicies producing states in india.

In India, the production of spices is widespread across various states. Some notable contributors include:
  1. Rajasthan: Approximately 1.23 million tonnes of spices are produced in Rajasthan.
  2. Gujarat: Gujarat yields around 1.03 million tonnes of spices.
  3. Andhra Pradesh: The state of Andhra Pradesh accounts for around 0.93 million tonnes of spice production.
  4. Telangana: Telangana produces approximately 0.74 million tonnes of spices.

It is worth mentioning that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognizes 109 distinct varieties of spices. Out of this extensive list, India takes pride in cultivating and supplying 75 different varieties of spices.
